I. The Burial of the Dead

April is the cruellest month, breeding

Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing

Memory and desire, stirring

Dull roots with spring rain.

Winter kept us warm, covering

Earth in forgetful snow, feeding

A little life with dried tubers.

I. THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD

Dull roots with spring rain.

Winter kept us warm, covering

A little life with dried tubers.

Summer surprised us, coming over the

Starnbergersee

With a shower of rain; we stopped in the

colonnade,

And went on in sunlight, into the Hof-

*

La flamme est la nuée du cœur

Et toutes les branches du sang

Elle chante notre air

Elle dissipe la buée de notre hiver.

As AI rapidly colonizes academia, what does it mean when knowledge production no longer serves humans?

We are facing the deepest epistemological shift since the Enlightenment: the institutional gamification of science (machines serving metrics) and the decoupling of human cognition (machines serving machines). 🧵👇

2/6

1. ‘Human readability’ is no longer the default premise.

For centuries, science meant compressing complex reality into low-dimensional equations our brains can grasp (like F=ma). Today’s AI maps inputs to outputs directly across high-dimensional manifolds.

Tomorrow’s core knowledge repositories won’t be natural language papers written for human minds—they will be embeddings, weight matrices, and synthetic datasets meant to be ingested by the next model. Humans are no longer the sole consumers of knowledge.

3/6

2. Academia is devolving into a closed-loop game of tokens.

AI generates the ideas and drafts the papers; AI writes the peer reviews. Written by machines, reviewed by machines, read by machines.

This output doesn’t serve human curiosity—it serves h-indices and tenure-track algorithms. A flood of syntactically flawless yet intellectually hollow ‘synthetic scholarship’ is creating an unprecedented epistemic smog.

4/6

3. The hijacking of the scientific agenda.

What questions are worth asking? Once driven by human curiosity and lived problems, research agendas are now reshaped by algorithmic convenience.

Resources skew heavily toward domains that are data-rich and easily reducible to a clean reward function. Exploration becomes automated optimization over a loss landscape, drifting further away from human intuition and societal needs.

5/6

4. Redefining the scholar’s identity.

When derivation, coding, and even hypothesis generation are automated, the human researcher is forced up the abstraction stack: retreating from ‘craftsman and solver’ to ‘questioner and value anchor.’

Compute has no concept of suffering, justice, or the arc of civilization. Future scholars must act as curators and philosophers—projecting alien, high-dimensional machine discoveries back into human thought, and anchoring blind compute to human meaning.

6/6

Ultimately, this marks the complete decoupling of ‘Knowing’ from ‘Understanding.’

Machines will ‘know’ the intricate correlations of the universe. Our greatest challenge—in an era where we no longer derive every step by hand—is refusing to become mere appendages to compute, and reclaiming the right to define what actually matters.
